Data protection law covers circumstances in which information (the “personal data”) about someone (the “data subject”) is used (“processed”) by another person or organisation (the “controller”) within a non-personal context.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) deals with most kinds of personal data processing and as a EU Regulation applies directly in Ireland together with further national rules set out in the Data Protection Act 2018.
